
Who we are
Roots + Wires focuses on research in digital health, health equity, health system decolonization, cultural humility in healthcare, and health policy. Roots represent our cultural traditions, strengths, and connections, and wires signify the ways our individual intersectional identities are embedded within complex human systems in an increasingly digitized world.

Co-Founder and Member
Dr. Shauna Davies is a registered nurse and an Associate Professor at the University of Regina who is working on several international projects surrounding informatics and immersive learning. These projects are the result of her active involvement with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Canadian Prairies Chapter, Digital Health Canada, International Medical Informatics Association, and subsection specific to Nursing Informatics, and co-director of Education of the Canadian Nursing Informatics Association. Her research interests include digital health, virtual care, virtual reality, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Dr. Davies has received grants from the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation to explore the use of virtual reality as a tool to assess professional competency. Her recent publications include two editor's choice articles in the Journal of American Medical Informatics Association.

Coatlicue S. Rose, LMHC, LPC-S, MS, PhD
Dr. Coatlicue S. Rose is a Research Associate at the University of Regina, a Policy Analyst at the B.C. Ministry of Health’s Nursing Policy Secretariat, a Washington State Licensed Mental Health Counsellor, a Texas Licensed Professional Counsellor Clinical Supervisor, and a Colorado Licensed Professional Counsellor. She’s an alum of the public policy analysis master’s certificate program at Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy and a Simulation Canada trained healthcare simulationist. Dr. Rose is an out-and-proud queer Chicana, born and raised in the land now known as Texas. Her research interests include decolonizing global health, policy solutions to address Canadian health system inequities, and immersive health care education for cultural humility and antiracism. Her recent publications include an article in the International Medical Informatics Association MedInfo 2025 Proceedings and two entries in the Encyclopedia of Radical Helping.

Claudio Azevedo Filho, RPN
Mr. Claudio Filho is a Policy Analyst with the Nursing Policy Secretariat at the B.C. Ministry of Health and a Registered Practical Nurse with a diverse professional background. Originally trained as a lawyer in Brazil, Mr. Filho worked with the District Attorney’s Office focusing on anti-corruption cases. After immigrating to Canada in 2016, his career took a huge turn: He became a nurse, completing his Practical Nursing training at the end of 2018 and registering in Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN). From 2019 to 2023, Mr. Filho worked in various hospital settings, including Rehabilitation, Complex Care, Medicine, Neurovascular, Memory Care, and Patient Flow. In 2024, he transitioned from bedside nursing to the public service, bringing his clinical experience to health policy development in British Columbia. His interdisciplinary expertise informs both his nursing research and his policy work in advancing equitable and effective healthcare.
