Photovoice for Health Equity

In 2024, Dr. Shauna Davies, Dr. Coatlicue Sierra Rose, and Mr. Claudio Bezerra Azevedo Filho were honoured to facilitate this Photovoice project focusing on the health and wellness needs of marginalized communities in Saskatchewan and how these needs may differ from the mainstream.

This equity-focused visual art project brought together a diverse group of 14 University of Regina undergraduate and graduate students who were asked to take photos from their daily lives speaking to the concerns of their respective Indigenous, Black, newcomer, 2S/LGBTQIA, and low socioeconomic status communities. Through sharing and analysis, these students identified several key themes:

  • Isolation and loneliness

  • Self-care

  • Nature

  • Keep moving!

  • Identity

  • Community

  • Brokenness

This exhibition is a collection of the photos the students nominated as most representative of their collective concerns and is currently housed in the Archway Gallery at the Dr. John Archer Library at the University of Regina.

Photovoice projects aim to enact social change by raising awareness and impacting policy solutions to complex social problems. This exhibition will travel to Saskatoon (location TBD) as part of the movement to decolonize global health.

This project was funded by a University of Regina President’s Seed Grant.
